Portraits

In 2008 I was inspired to improve my drawing skills.  At first all of my portraits were created with pencils and loose leaf paper that I had lying around.  Every artist starts somewhere, and with practice, the artwork gets better and better.  I've learned to stop drawing what the mind says 'hair should look like' and to start drawing what I see.  Drawing contrast with highlights and true black sections turns a 2D drawing into a portrait that looks photo-realistic.  Today, twelve years since 2008, I prefer to create portraits with colored pencils and quality drawing paper, but one thing that hasn't changed, is that I learn something new with every illustration I create.

Littles

Originally I only commissioned portraits of babies and children.  Their round faces and smooth skin make them my sweetest muse.  Each was drawn with either pencil or pencil crayon, on 80lb paper (8.5x11"). 2012 - 2019.

Mini Portraits

Mini portraits are new to my portfolio, both are created in 2020.  I find that there is less detail in the eyes, which is usually the focal point of my portrait artwork, but they give me practice drawing textiles, clothing, animals, and other little intricate details around the mini portrait.  I'm hoping to create more portraits with animals this year, so check back regularly for updates to my porfolio.

Memorial

When the ones we love leave us, a piece of them stays with us forever, in our hearts.  Capturing their nature in a portrait has been a very special process for me.  These drawings are a place that I've poured my emotion into.  Whether I knew them personally, or through the stories that were shared with me, I hope that my drawings keep their memory alive.

Flash Art

I've always been inspired by tattoo art! Portrait artist Kat Von D is one of my biggest inspirations, and I hope to be put some of these pieces on skin.  Most of this series was inspired while watching reruns of LA Ink and Ink Master.  Each drawing was created with soft pencil crayon and copic liner, on lightweight paper. 2014-2015.

Sugarskull Series

Sugar Skulls originate from Mexico.  They represent a departed soul and are celebrated on Day of the Dead.  The celebration is held at the beginning of November to honor deceased loved ones.  For me, the intricate lines and flowers on the faces are captivating.  The bright colors invigorate each portrait, and portray a different tone and energy.

These portraits were painted with Acrylic on a 16x20" canvas. 2014-2015.

 Comic Villains

The Joker and Harley Quinn, from Suicide Squad 2016.  Harley was once a psychologist at Arkham Asylum and was assigned to treat the Joker.  She eventually falls in love with the Joker and becomes his lover and accomplice.  Today they are one of pop cultures most recognizable villain couples.  Each portrait was drawn with soft pencil crayon on 80lb drawing paper (8.5x11").  My favorite part of these portraits were the Joker's tattoos, and Harley's makeup, which illustrate their deeply rooted insanity. 2016.

Tattoos

The latest addition to my portfolio are tattoos.
